Obstetric Ultrasound
Obstetric Ultrasound is the use of ultrasound scans in pregnancy. It is safe, non-invasive, accurate and a cost-effective investigation of the foetus. It has proven to be a useful diagnostic tool in obstetrics, playing an important role in the management of every pregnant woman.
Obstetrical ultrasound is a useful test to:
- Diagnose and confirm early pregnancy.
- Evaluate vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy.
- Determine the position, age, size and growth of the baby.
- Detect if there are multiple pregnancies
- Detect congenital abnormalities in the baby.
- Locate the position of the placenta.
- Determine the amount of amniotic fluid around the baby.
- Evaluate blood flow in the umbilical cord or in some cases assess blood flow in the placenta, using the doppler technique to confirm foetal well being.
- Detect uterine and pelvic abnormalities which may cause complications during pregnancy or child birth.
- Routine obstetric scans are generally requested at 10-14 weeks and at 20 - 24 weeks.
- Additional scans are only performed for specific indications based on the clinical history and antenatal examination.
NB: Patients Must Bring Old X-Rays and scans for all procedures! |
