A CT Colonography is an examination done to visualize abnormalities of the colon.
The patient has to have bowel preparation before the examination in order to clear bowel of any faecal matter.
A small foleys catheter is inserted into the rectum and air is introduced to fill the colon.
This examination is done to screen for polyps and other lesions in the large intestine
PurposeThis is a screening and diagnostic examination to detect colonic abnormalities. Virtual colonoscopy is a much less invasive procedure than traditional colonoscopy or barium enema and requires neither sedation nor admission to hospital. The preparation for the procedure is also less unpleasant.
After the scan the computer generates an image of the colon allowing the radiologist to do a virtual tour through the colon. It is highly accurate in detecting significant polyps 5mm and over in size.
NB: Patients Must Bring Old X-Rays and scans for all procedures!
