OUR VENUE AT ETHEKWINI HOSPITAL AND HEART CENTRE
This department has been operational for 18 months. This is a world class, completely digital department with Hospital information system (HIS) integrated into our RIS/PACS.
We have installed a fully digital interventional angiographic lab and have invested a lot of resources in making this our interventional centre of excellence with appropriately skilled interventional radiologists. Some of the procedures include haem cath insertion, biopsies, RF ablation, embolisations, among others.
Apart from the interventional suite, we have a top of the range 64 Slice MDCT Scanner capable of Coronary angiography, whole body angiography and CT colonography with 3D and multiplanar reconstructions. 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner for neurological, orthopaedic, cardiac and body imaging; a DR bucky room which decreases patient waiting time and can perform whole spine xrays by a special technique.
High definition Ultrasound Scanner for multi-organ ultrasound scanning including small parts, vascular Doppler and musculoskeletal imaging .
- OUR STATE OF THE ART BSU MACHINE is wireless, has superior image quality , with immediate viewing of images in the ward.
- COMING SOON –MRI UNDER GA. We have purchased an MRI compatible Boyles machine for paediatric slates and MRI under conscious sedation.

JACKPERSAD& PARTNERS INC. JOINS THE DIGITAL ERA OF RADIOLOGY
WIRELESS NETWORK
All our venues are now connected by a wireless broadband network ,the roll out of which commenced in July last year ,at our Ethekwini venue and will be completed by Dec 2009 with the addition of our PMB Mediclinic venue .Backup of our network is achieved using the Metroconnect network.
This means that all our venues are live online , so that if a patient has been to any of our venues before , the patient’s details are available online and there is no need to recapture the patient.
We also have immediate access to previous studies from any venue in the network which enhances reporting and decreases patient waiting time.
In addition , a case can be viewed throughout the network , and internationally ,so if a second opinion is required , it can be obtained immediately and obviating the need for transport of films to the other radiologist.
Given our geographical spread, the logistics of setting up the network was challenging with many frustrations and teething problems but the benefits outweigh the problems.
Our wireless network is the largest privately owned network in Africa, of which we are rightly proud.
RIS/PACS ROLLOUT
In keeping with world class best practice and responsible environmental attitude,we are endeavouring to lower our carbon footprint by various initiatives.
The first initiative is to reduce our dependence on X Ray film & chemistry. All our venues have done away with conventional film processing and have been digital for a few years now. This was another first for our practice.
EHHC is the first truly integrated digital hospital in the country with integration between the hospital information system (HIS) and Radiology information system (RIS) resulting in electronic patient records in a paper light environment. As a result of close co-operation between the hospital and our department, requests are received electronically and images are distributed electronically to within the hospital environment using a PACS system.
Following on this ,we will reduce our dependence on film ,patients would now receive a CD and hardcopy images on high quality paper. This is already in place at some of our venues and has been well received. The industry standard is to only supply a CD, but we feel that a hard copy is important.
For our hospital based venues,we need co-operation from hospital administration to set up networks and provide the necessary hardware. Our system is web based and therefore accessible by anyone with the necessary permission and from any computer connected to the internet.
Assistance from our colleagues in dealing with the hospital groups would be welcomed.
Now that our practice roll out is complete. this is a task which we will continue to strive for in the coming year….
